Does therapy really work?
Therapy is beneficial for many people, with research showing its effectiveness. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), about 75% of those who try talk therapy experience improvement. Keep in mind that therapy is a gradual process—each session is a step toward growth and progress.
How do I know if I'm ready for therapy?
You might be ready for therapy if you're experiencing emotional distress, struggling with life challenges, or feeling stuck and unsure how to move forward. Here are some signs that therapy could be beneficial: Persistent emotional distress, difficulty coping, unhealthy patterns, feeling hopeless, or feeling a need to be supported. If any of these resonate with you, therapy might be a helpful step. There's no "perfect" time—if you're considering it, that alone might be a sign you're ready.
Is what I say to my psychologist confidential?
In Alberta, anything you discuss with your psycholgist is confidential which means that anything you discuss with a psychologist during your sessions will be kept private and not shared with anyone else unless you give explicit consent. The only exception is that Psychologists may disclose personal or confidential information without a client’s consent when there is likelihood of imminent and grave harm to the client and/or a third-party, or when required to do so by law.
What happens at my first visit?
At your first appointment, the psychologist will ask about your concerns and personal history. They may inquire about when your issue began, what affects it, and its impact on your life. Questions may also cover your background, relationships, work, and any substance or medication use. This information-gathering process may take multiple sessions and could include psychological tests.
How many therapy sessions are needed?
The number of therapy sessions needed varies. Many people see significant improvement in 12 to 20 sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term support. Some conditions require ongoing therapy for lasting progress. That said, any therapy is better than none—one session is already a step in the right direction!
Can I do therapy online?
Yes, therapy can be done online, and it's often just as effective as in-person sessions for many mental health concerns. Online therapy, also called teletherapy or virtual therapy, allows you to connect with a licensed psychologist through secure video calls or phone calls. It offers convenience, accessibility, and flexibility, making it a great option for those with busy schedules, mobility issues, or limited local therapy options. However, some concerns—like severe mental health conditions or crisis situations—may be better suited for in-person support.
